Contrary to what most people think, gas stations don’t make a lot of money off the gas they sell. Yes, it is a gas station and yes, they do sell tons of gas but at the end of the day, a gas station only makes a few pennies per gallon after taxes and operating costs. In fact, gas stations make less money when the price of gas goes up. Today’s gas stations make far more on all the other stuff they sell like snacks and sun glasses. These items account for more than 60% of total earnings for a gas station.

It’s impossible for the Bureau of Weights and Measures to check all the gas pumps in the United States on a regular basis. Some pumps may go unchecked for accuracy for years. All this means is that there’s a chance you may use a pump that’s not accurate. There are inspection stickers on most pumps, so you can at least know when it was last inspected.

What’s the best location to put a gas station? If there’s a four-way intersection, you want the corner on the right after the light. The science is that drivers don’t want to make left turns, and they want to get past the light before they fuel.

Kentucky Fried Chicken started out as a gas station. In the 1940’s and 50’s Colonel Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken offered chicken dinners at his gas stations. When the construction of the interstate highway system brought hard time to his gas stations, he decided to franchise his chicken restaurants instead.
